It’s been more than a year and a half since I first stepped into Budget Cuts, an instantly promising VR title from indie developer Neat Corporation with a novel and efficient locomotion system that blends perfectly with the game’s throwing-knife stealth action gameplay. Though the studio has been largely silent since then, they’ve assured me that the game is being actively developed (“like, a lot”) and headed toward an early 2018 launch.

Update (03/06/18): Neat Corp co-founder Joachim Holmér recently tweeted that new ‘Budget Cuts’ content will be featured at GDC 2018. Holmér will also be giving a dev talk on the game’s portal locomotion.

Original article (9/27/17): If you’ve never played the free Budget Cuts demo, you have no excuse not to fire up your headset and give it a go. I haven’t heard of a single person who has played the demo and come out of it not genuinely impressed and ready for more.

Sadly, the taste of the demo is the last we’ve seen basically since it launched more than a year ago, with the studio offering no new updates into the state of the game’s development, not even so much as a screenshot.

After hearing recently from a few folks in the VR community who were wondering whether the game was still in the works, I reached out to get a pulse on Neat Corporation and make sure the development team hadn’t got lost in VR somewhere along the way. Much to my relief, the studio says they’ve been head down, hard at work on Budget Cuts, and confirmed the game is on track for an early 2018 release.

“We’re spending minimal time on PR in order to focus on development of the game, seeing as we are such a small team. This understandably leads to people wondering about the status. Just rest assured, we are working on the game, like, a lot,” Neat Corporation developer Marko Permanto told me.

  • Jesper Nielsen

Hype for this killer (robot) application!!!!! I played the demo a lot! The demo is my favorite VR game no doubt even if it’s a demo.
I love the music, the style, the sense of humor that the design create. I love to sneak inside the bulding, it feel so real. Stealth gaming is my favorite no doubt.
I give all my gamer trust to this team, and I already wish to thanks for all the fun I had with the demo. I do not know if for 2018 I will have Oculus or I will excange with the microsoft mixed reality HMD so I hope the game will be compatible with both on steam vr.
p.s. if I were in Valve I would give them a bag full of money to associate the ip with Valve and help develpement.

I suspect there are a couple factors here – one of them being that VR is still in the “trough of disappointment” – they may be working on other things while letting the industry settle out a bit. The other may be if its a small team associated with it, they are just taking their time refining while also waiting to see what the collective controller situation may be. Would not surprise me in the least they are waiting for the revised controllers from Vive to reach the hands of developers.

As one of the first things available when the Vive first came out it looked good but its competition was also limited. Since then many other good VR games have come out and have significantly raised the quality bar. Unless they’ve improved the graphics and gameplay a lot its now going to look very basic and dated.

  • Sin Dong

This game was a demonstration of what VR can be in the beginning but since then there are AAA titles that dwarfed it. I don’t see this game as being fun without a gun.

    • kek

then you’re just not into stealth games

  • Cristianfx

    instant buy

  • Wow Really?

Im sure it would be a fun as a budget game at this point. I loved it when it first came out. Honestly they need to do some PR. People feel they have abandoned the game. How long does it really take to make a few comments or updates to here and there?

Nope sorry I dont see this game every coming out. If it does its just not going to be relevant anymore.

  • jj

Yeah by now other games have surpassed the benefits that BC provided. They should have actually got this out faster to match where the markets at compared to where it will be in 2018.

Although its a fair point people are making below about how when it came out it had little competition and vr gaming has advanced massively since those embryonic days, the demo holds a special place in my heart and I for one will be instantly purchasing this full game once its out.
