David Bowie's Legacy Lives On in Forthcoming Augmented Reality App

Famed singer-songwriter David Bowie will return to the real world as part of an augmented reality app launching on Jan. 8, 2019, which would have been his 72nd birthday.

The app, which will be available on iOS and Android, serves as an augmented reality recreation of the "David Bowie Is," a touring art exhibition celebrating Bowie's life and work.

Users will have access to more than 500 high-resolution scans of costumes, sketches, works of art, and other memorabilia to view up close in the physical space. The app will also feature 60 new artifacts recently added to the exhibition.

"View it at your leisure or jump directly to the things you love. Revisit as often as you like and save any item to your own collection within the app. This spectacular iteration of the iconic exhibition is yours forever," states the app's website.

Bowie fans have already gotten a taste of what the app experience will present. Earlier this year, The New York Times published an augmented reality feature on the outfits featured in the exhibit, including the artist's lightning bolt suit worn during the 1973 Aladdin Sane tour and the clown costume featured in 1980's "Ashes to Ashes" music video.

I recall 2016 starting on a particularly sour note, with David Bowie passing away from liver cancer on Jan. 10, just days after his birthday. Therefore, I, for one, expect to particularly appreciate the arrival of this app.

While fans can always revisit the artist through his music and videos, augmented reality gives them another dimension through which they can relive the artist's work.
