‘Beat Saber’ Gets Linkin Park Music Pack, Celebrating 20 Years Since ‘Hybrid Theory’

11

Ever since Beat Saber developers Beat Games was acquired by Facebook, it seems the popular block-slashing rhythm game has been able to nab a bunch of lucrative music deals, with bands such as Green Day, Timbaland, and Imagine Dragons signing on to put their music into the game. Now the studio reveals that it’s adding more high-profile music today with a new pack from Linkin Park.

The Linkin Park Music Pack is available starting today, launching in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the band’s Hybrid Theory album.

The pack will be available for $14 (or $2 per song) across all platforms, which includes Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, SteamVR-compatible headsets, and PSVR. This effectively adds 55 new beat-maps to the game across multiple difficulties.

Tracks include:

  • Bleed It Out
  • Breaking the Habit
  • Faint
  • Given Up
  • In The End
  • New Divide
  • Numb
  • One Step Closer
  • Papercut
  • Somewhere I Belong
  • What I’ve Done

The pack also features a new tunnel environment, four custom light colors, and revamped lighting system, the studio says.

You can check out Cas & Chary playing all of the new Linkin Park songs in the video below.

While Beat Saber has sold well over two million copies worldwide across all platforms, Facebook still seems keen on keeping the music flowing. Earlier this year the company said it sold over 10 million songs via DLC, including bands such as Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Timbaland, K/DA, Panic! At the Disco, and Monster Cat record label artists.

Nice, this could be the first song pack I would actually buy. But I wish they had invested some more time in that tunnel environment. That feels very lackluster to me.

At this point in the game, after achieving VR-must-play-status and have Facebook money and support to blow this thing into a big service game, the studio should really invest in a big visual update. Beat Saber is big leagues now, time to shed the old skin and be more.

They can’t yey – they are going for as much feature parity with the Quest; hence all simple environments and lighting. Look at what mappers are doing with the Noodle Extensions mod – it’s like a different game.

Those could completely be rendered on a Quest

When people try to do complicated Mapping Extensions levels on Quest, it often drops to 15fps. Even my RTX 2080Ti can struggle with some of the new Noodle Extensions levels using Chroma lighting. The game engine isn’t optimized for this. I suspect it’s optimized for latency consistency and very specific shaders so Quest can pull off dynamic lights and particle effects. It’s trying to target a low common denominator to reach the widest market.

Tetris Effect is on Quest and the subscription based Supernatural is Quest exclusive, has very similar gameplay to Beat Saber but way, way nicer graphics. Sorry, but you can’t scapegoat the Quest for the lackluster visuals of Beat Saber when others have done so, so much better. What I am critizising is also not just the technical simplicity of the graphics, but also the art. Rez Infinite showed us how much you can do in VR with simple shapes and showers of particles. It can be done. Beat Games just has to be willing to step up their game to the big league. They got a Top 3 most sold VR Game with a built in DLC money printer. Now they need to show us that they can get this game out of its cheap looking tiny-indi-studio-shell

Gave the new maps a try and damn, expert levels are quite challenging! They are pulling out some new patterns and sequences that I haven’t seen before and it’s quite difficult to ace them! And I mean, it’s Linkin Park….what else needs to be said? Woo!

damn no CASTLE OF GLASS WTFFFFFF

Is this the first Beat Saber background that looks like a place?

    • James Cobalt

Green Day’s was a street surrounded by mid-rises but it’s very cartoonish.

  • Nice!
