‘No Man’s Sky: Desolation’ Update Is Basically ‘Dead Space’ In VR

Explore the wreckage of procedurally-generated freighters in this free sci-fi horror update.

This week Hello Games released yet another free update to its 2016 space exploration game, No Man’s Sky, this time introducing massive haunted freighters complete with procedurally-generated interiors, deadly alien infestations, and valuable treasures to raid.

Available now on PC, Xbox, and PS4 with support for PS VR and SteamVR headsets, the No Man’s Sky: Desolation expands upon the existing space exploration game with procedurally-generated survival horror missions set aboard the ghostly remains of derelict freighters scattered throughout the galaxy. Like an eerie snowflake, each of these cursed vessels features its own unique interior, story content, and rewards.

Speaking of story content, players can expect to find a series of unique mysteries aboard each abandoned freighter. By collecting hidden clues, they’ll piece together the untimely fates of each crew member before learning more about the ships final hours using items such as the Captain’s Log, Crew Manifest, Emergency Broadcast, and Security Credentials.

Of course it wouldn’t be space-based survival horror without a deadly alien infestation. Some freighters will require players to battle their way through bug-like alien creatures (don’t disturb the nests), security drones, and other intergalactic threats as they make their way through each unique nightmare. Those who survive the onslaught and piece together the mystery will walk away a variety of valuable salvage, including exclusive upgrades for their own capital ships.

“Being a small dot amongst the stars can bring a sense of awe and wonder, but we’ve always wanted to explore a little more those feelings of fear and dread that come from being alone in the depths of space,” said Hello Games according to Gamesradar. “Terror in the face of the unknown, or the dawning realization that you’re treading in the footsteps of those who met a lonely end at the edge of the universe – it’s a rich science fiction tradition, and one not really touched on in No Man’s Sky – until now.”

In order to locate these deep space freighters, players will need to purchase coordinates from the new Scrap Dealer merchant located at any occupied space station. At 5,000,000 Units each, these maps aren’t exactly cheap, but they will point you in the direction of valuable wreckage which can be looted multiple items. Each map purchased leads to the same wreckage, meaning you’ll need top purchase more in order to discover new loot.

In addition to these procedurally-generated freighters, the Desolation Update introduces a handful of improvements to both gameplay as well as visuals. This includes adjustments to both weapons and enemies designed to offer a “faster, more dynamic combat experience,” as well as improved bloom effects and lens flair.

No Man’s Sky is currently 50% off ($24.99) on PS4, PC, and Xbox with full support for PS VR and PC VR headsets. There’s even crossplay, allowing you and your friends to raid derelict ships together regardless of your platform.
