Microsoft has unveiled practically every detail of the HoloLens 2 except for when eager developers and enterprise customers can expect to receive the device.
Well, now that cat is out of the bag.
While recent developments hinted that the AR headset would arrive soon, Harry Shum, executive vice president of Microsoft's artificial intelligence and research group, confirmed to Reuters that the HoloLens 2 will "go on sale" in September. Shum was a featured speaker at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai when he broke the news on Thursday.
When contacted by Next Reality, a Microsoft spokesperson declined to confirm the report.
Microsoft is primarily pitching the HoloLens 2 to enterprise customers, with the device available for pre-order for $3,500 outright or $125 per month along with a subscription to Dynamics 365 Remote Assist. Despite its enterprise intentions, Microsoft will also make the HoloLens 2 available to registered developers for the same standalone price or $99 per month bundled with free trials of Unity Pro & the PiXYZ plugin, along with $500 in Azure credit.
Based on the device's specifications and hands-on testing by those who've had advance access, the successor to the original HoloLens improves in just about every area, from the device's field of view to lighter weight distribution to overall capabilities and user experience.
Moreover, the next-generation HoloLens puts pressure on Magic Leap -- whose first-generation Magic Leap One is now a year old -- to catch up to what is now the premier AR headset available.
