IO Interactive revealed in November that Hitman 3 (2021) would finally be getting PC VR support, coming just in time for the game’s one-year anniversary. The studio today announced it’s launching the whole trilogy with PC VR support on January 20th.

Update (January 13th, 2022): As promised, IO interactive has laid out some future plans for Hitman 3 today, revealing that the PC VR supported version of the game is coming on January 20th. You can catch the whole year 2 roadmap here, which includes new game modes, technology improvements, maps, and more.

Notably, owners of HITMAN Trilogy on Steam will not only be able to play Hitman 3 in VR, but also Hitman 1 and 2. This includes two-handed shooting, throwing, and object interaction—and what appears to be a greater degree of room-scale movement in-game.

The original article announcing PC VR availability follows below:

Original Article (November 22nd, 2021): Hitman 3 has been available across consoles and PC for almost a year now, offering VR support exclusively through PlayStation consoles—meaning only PSVR users could play.

Now in a Year 2 promo video for the game, the studio says PC VR players will finally get a crack at the action. IO Interactive says more details will follow, including technical specs and supported platforms which will be revealed on 20 January 2022, so we’re sure to learn more then.

In the video, the studio showed both Valve Index and Meta Rift S. Although the inclusion of Rift S may point to dedicated Meta platform release, most likely this means PC versions of the game will receive SteamVR support.

Notably, the PSVR version doesn’t support PS Move, and although that doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon, the video shows both Index and Rift S users immersing themselves in the game’s detailed world using their respective motions controllers. PSVR users play via gamepad, albeit spatially tracked to add an immersive edge to shooting and garrote-wiring enemies.

Other features said to arrive to the game in 2022 include ray tracing support on PC, a new game mode called ‘Elusive Target Arcade’, and something IO Interactive is calling “a major update to the game” for Spring 2022.

The studio promises post-launch support “for another 12 months” which includes new maps, storylines, modes and ways to play. Again, we’ll be all eyes and ears on the studio’s dedicated Hitman YouTube channel on January 20th, 2022.

Interesting… A game that i didn’t care about previously, suddenly becomes attractive. I’m curious how much time will pass, until other game developers and publishers wake up.

The lack of triple A in VR is really tough.
The other day it tried Walkabout Mini Golf on my Quest, one of the very best rated game on the entire platform, just after playing a few AAA flat games earlier in the day.

…I felt so alone. Zero textures, near zero sound design, sad shitty background music, polygones the size of a mountain, just like 90 percent of the other VR games in existence basically.

VR is really in desperate need of triple A VR support like this one. The future is not about Half-Life Alyx like experiences for now, it’s in the effort from established studios and their amazing flat games to add VR support !

I had no interest in Hitman franchise, but just like you, I do now.

      • Blaexe

To be fair, Walkabout Minigolf is 98% rated positive on Steam (!) so your complaints seem more like “you” problems rather than general ones.

I’m playing Resident evil 4 at the moment. Dated, 2d cutscenes.. But I’m loving it anyway :D It will take me many hours to play trough. I think ports can surely add a lot of value!

We do get the occasional triple A release from regular flat studios, but far to often they don’t do the VR version justice. In this case with Hitman it does seem like the developers has done a good job, though we really won’t know for sure until release. They better have done a good job or the sales will suffer when people rate the game on Steam.

If developers do a good job with a port and the game is from a popular franshise one would believe there’s actually some decent money to be made. Sure VR market is small but VR players is also desperate for larger releases. Just like with Half Life Alyx, everyone with a VR device will rush to buy the game and that has to translate to a large cash-in for the devs.

I mean how large is the VR crowd on Steam now? Around 2% of the total Steam userbase? And that translates to how many players? Millions? That’s a lot! And with a hungry VR crowd there absolutely should be money to be made if the developers put some work in and do the VR port Justice.

      • I just looked and… as far as I can tell… the game is exclusive to Epic’s gamestore.

According to the developer Hitman 3 VR arrives on Steam tomorrow.

“HITMAN Trilogy will be available digitally on January 20 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Epic Games Store. As well as Steam and Xbox Game Pass. Let’s talk more about these new platforms.

HITMAN 3 arrives on Steam to coincide with
the start of Year 2 and will have full support for PC VR and all of the
technical improvements that we mentioned earlier, such as Ray Tracing,
XeSS and Variable Rate Shading. We’re working on support for Steam
Achievements and Trading Cards too – plus we’ll be including the Trinity Pack (the HITMAN 3 pre-order bonus) for free with all editions of HITMAN 3 for the first 30 days.”

This could be one of the best games in VR on release. I hope it’s a good implementation.

    • Geogaddi

I can’t imagine it will be anything but great.

The PSVR version, from what I’ve heard, is amazing apart from the fact that its blurry (always the case with PSVR). has a lot of pop-in, and some motion controls in the game are badly implemented (using your gamepad like a motion controller for shooting…ugh).

All of this should be easily fixed on the PCVR version with better hardware and proper motion controls.

      • Ad

Controls are not simple to add to a port, so we’ll see.

  • I was very let down by the lack of hand controller tracking in the PSVR version, and it being PSVR exclusive gave me even less reason to pick the game up, since I didn’t have PSVR. But THIS LOOKS AWESOME

    F*** Yeah!!! Can’t wait!

  • crackhead

Will I be able to play it if I have it in epic games?

  • I expect it’ll be janky, I’ll expect it’ll feel shoehorned, and I’ll expect I’LL LOVE IT! I think I’m going to have to buy this game!
