Watch Trimble Give the Microsoft HoloLens 2 the Elon Musk Tesla Cybertruck Smash Test, Sort Of

Everyone seems to be talking about Elon Musk's new futuristic Tesla Cybertruck, the vehicle that either looks like a cool moon rover or an outlandish video game replica, depending on your tastes.

That's why it's no surprise that early HoloLens 2 partner Trimble decided to join in the fun by giving its customized version of the HoloLens 2 the same tests Musk gave his hyped electric vehicle.

If you saw the Tesla event, you know this is dangerous territory, as at least one of the durability tests conducted by a Tesla engineer live on stage failed spectacularly.

In the realm of construction and manufacturing, being able to use a device like the HoloLens 2 can be incredibly useful while wearing a hard hat in dangerous conditions, which seems to be the inspiration for this unscientific demo of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2.

The company calls the customized augmented reality device and hard hat combination "certified around the world for hardhat impact and electrical safety, visor basic impact protection, and intrinsic safety."

The first "test" shows a Trimble worker using a mallet to attack the customized HoloLens 2, mimicking the Tesla Cybertruck sledgehammer test. And, like the Tesla test — no problem.

But then the Trimble team whips out the large metal ball to test how the XR10 with HoloLens 2 will hold up compared to Musk's not-quite-smash-proof windows.

We won't spoil the results, you can watch it yourself above. (Hint: This isn't an entirely serious test meant to be used a proof of the product's actual durability — it's just for fun). And if you're a longtime HoloLens fan, take heart, no real HoloLens 2 devices were harmed in the making of this video (watch closely).

However, we will note that if you're lucky enough to be one of the first to get your hands on a HoloLens 2, well, don't try this at home. Love and caress your new leading-edge AR device and put it to good use.
