Creator Behind ’90s Cult Classic ‘Another World’ Announces PSVR Game ‘Paper Beast’

Coming first to PSVR later this year

Éric Chahi, the creator behind cult classic platformer Another World (1991), is working on a new VR game called Paper Beast. In a rare occurrence, the title set to release on PSVR first later this year, and then on PS4 sometime in 2020, coming from Chahi’s newly formed studio Pixel Reef.

The result of three years of development, Paper Beast is set to be an atmospheric adventure inspired by Big Data, throwing you into a living world that has emerged from “the vast memory of a data server,” Chahi writes in a PS blog post.

For now, Paper Beast is a bit of a mystery; we’re not certain exactly what sort of game it’s supposed to be outside of the game’s ability to let users explore their surroundings, although it’s promising to be a wide-scale simulation filled with strange paper creatures and a rich, visually intense environment. Chahi says it’s “not a god game, but we did put some key ingredients in it.”

While Chahi is staying tight-lipped, he does say there will be a story, albeit an unspoken one told through the events of the world and their pacing. Like the genre-defining classic Another World (also known as Out of This World in North America), there’s no text or dialogue, only a physics-based environment to guide the player.

“With Paper Beast, we wanted to create a complete ecosystem with unique wildlife. We wanted to reproduce the excitement you might feel as an explorer discovering a virgin land, a place where no human has been before,” Chahi says. “When you watch animals in nature, you feel something special about how they move and react. They exhibit an intense sense of vitality that makes exploring all the more enriching. You will interact with the creatures and will start to form delicate bonds with them.”

Chahi says gestures are spatialized in VR, “so you can fall into a fully interactive, simulated living world.” This, we assume, means the game will make full use of PS Move, although that’s just healthy conjecture at this time.

Audio is also a big linchpin to the game, Chahi says. Pixel Reef has employed a three-person team working full-time on the game’s binaural experience.

In case you’re wondering, the game’s recently released trailer uses only real-time footage from the Paper Beast game engine. The unique papier-mâché art style is certainly something to behold.

Looks good, shame its only PSVR. I’d buy this if it was on SteamVR/PC.

    • ivan

      obviously it is timed exclusive

      • Rosko

        why obviously?

        • ivan

There is no Playstation Only mark

I doubt it. You can’t just take a game developed for PSVR hardware and run it on a PC. You’d basically need to totally rewrite it.

Not really, such small games without hight-end graphics can be ported to different platforms very quickly

I basically earn almost $6,000-$8,000 per month via internet. It is actually a sufficient amount to definitely replace my last work net earnings, mainly thinking about I simply just work about 20 hour or so a week in a home office.I lost my job after operating for the same organization for many years, I needed very trustworthy source of income. I was not thinking about programs that promises to make you rich in just few days you see all over the net. Those all are kind of ponzi mlm plan in which you need to initially get interested customers then sell something to friends and relatives or any person to make sure they will be in your team. The best benefit of working on-line is that I am always home with the children and also enjoy time with family on different beaches of the world. Honestly,it is easier than you would think, all you have to do is submit a very simple form to obtain front line access to the Home Profit System. The guidelines are extremely easy, you do not have to be a computer expert, but you must understand how to use the net. It is as simple as being on Facebook. Here’s the ultimate way to start ->-> http://wedo.love/6Z

Are you sure it’s console exclusive?

  • Man, why is the hype train always starting on this website? They have said little to nothing about the game or how it’s played. All we know is what it *kinda* looks like, but that look *might* change, maybe. Come on man, either tell me something real or shelve the post. Enough of this Magic-Leap-esque BS-factory stuff.

Because if Eric Chahi comes off the volcano where he was based, to make a VR game, maybe it’s a good piece of news, that’s worth reporting! Thanks guys, made my day, now ask the guy for PC version :)
