Relive Past Memories As Location-Based AR Experiences With ReplayAR

AR technology turns your smartphone into a personal time machine.

Available for free on iOS devices now, ReplayAR features a combination of geocaching and AR technology that allows users to capture and freeze photos in specific locations and visit their visual memories at any point in the future by simply returning to the location in which they were snapped.

Say for instance you were on your annual camping trip at your favorite campgrounds. After snapping a photo using ReplayAR, the application tags the digital image with its precise GPS coordinates, allowing the user to return to the location weeks, months, even years later and view the photo exactly where it was taken using AR.

“Our patented technology allows you to geocache your memories and see personal experiences projected on the locations where they actually happened,” said inventor and founder, Jay Huddy, in an official release. “Finding these AR photos in the real world is basically a combination of Instagram and Pokémon GO, but beyond that, the AR you create today can also be seen by future generations and provides a lasting way of saying: We were here.”

Here’s how it works: after opening the app and allowing access to your mic and camera, every photo you take will instantly be pinned to the exact location it was shot, at which point you can then walk around and view the floating 2D image from any angle in AR. By tapping on the photo, you can access additional information regarding its capture, such as the time and location in which it was taken. You can also record your AR experiences using in-app video capture.

“Imagine going to a place you visited long ago and seeing it exactly as it was, with all your friends and loved ones still there, just as you remember them,” added CMO Brandon Martin. “That’s a powerful thing. The long-term applications for ReplayAR’s imaging tech and data collection are massive, ranging from historic preservation and architectural restoration to tourism, education, humanities, marketing, forensics, and even military intelligence.”

“ReplayAR is an open time capsule that’s all around us at all times,” said Keith McCullough, ReplayAR CTO and VP of WorkinMan Interactive, an official partner on the app. “Personally what captured my imagination was the idea of being able to see projections of our daughter growing up in our house and having those moments frozen there for us to see whenever we wanted. It sounds a little like an episode of Black Mirror, but hopefully one with a happy ending!”

Huddy hopes ReplayAR will eventually develop into a full-fledged social media platform, in which millions of users across the globe populate the reality with a layer of digital content.  To assist in this mass adoption, ReplayAR is offering a cash prize of $500 for the most creative use of the app.

Those looking to participate can post photos or videos of their potential use-cases on Instagram with the hashtag #ReplayAR. There are also $100 prizes for “Most Creative,” “Most Inspirational,” and “Most Adventurous.”

ReplayAR is available free on iOS devices beginning today.
