Visualix's Epic AR Demo At CES 2019

I was totally blown away by Visualix, a Berlin start-up which demoed its AR cloud wayfinding application at CES 2019. As I've said many times, serendipity, that chance discovery, is one of the most exciting things about CES. Visualix enables many separate devices to share an AR session within centimeter-range accuracy. Any data or object, once geographically in place, can be seen by other devices later because of the hyper-localization and persistence of Visualix’s device agnostic AR Cloud solution.

If a crate is moved inside a mapped warehouse, the new position is updated in the Visualix cloud, so every device in the network has its new position, allowing the crate to be found easily by other workers. If a digital treasure chest hidden by a tree is opened by an AR game player, the other players who walk by later will find it open in the same position. If a 3D animated love note is left on the counter the special someone, they can find it still there hours or even months later.

Founded by Darius Pajouh and Michal Bucko, Visualix aims to enable AR experiences needed to augment workers in the modern factory and warehouse. According to Visualix, all users need is an AR-enabled smartphone to scan a real-world environment and enable precision placement of persistent information, graphics, and even interactive content. The company has partnered with large hardware providers, telecoms and industrial players to utilize its mapping and positioning technology in multiple locations worldwide. Visualix systems are working today in spaces as large as ten million square feet. For reference, the largest factory in the US builds 747s in Everett, Washington.

During a Visualix 3D scan the data is uploaded to its proprietary “AR Cloud”. The cloud allows multiple devices to access the same spatial information in real time. Two devices with two different perspectives will see the same 3D objects placed in the same physical location. If one device sees a change in the physical environment or makes a change to the AR layer on top, the AR Cloud can update the 3D map in real time across devices.

Visualix’s spatial computing backend can store data associated with real-world objects based on the 3D mapping itself, not QR codes or RFID. AR content can be positioned in the 3D map using the Visualix Content Management System, or enterprises can build their own applications on top of the Visualix Mapping and Positioning Platform. Visualix believes their 3D mapping and positioning technology can support use cases from retail to logistics, from manufacturing and telecoms.

The founders told me their participation has resulted in interest from 5G providers and the telecommunications industry, as it might serve as an infrastructure layer for mobile edge computing platforms.
