HTC VIVE Cosmos controllers briefly detailed in new video

Last month at CES, HTC announced the VIVE Cosmos, a new headset for its virtual reality line up. Though we had the chance to see the headset up close, there's still a lot we don't know about the VIVE Cosmos. Slowly but surely, HTC is beginning to pull back the veil and release some details, starting today with new information about its controllers.

The controllers are undoubtedly the most eye-catching part of the VIVE Cosmos. Not only do they look entirely different from the standard VIVE's controllers, but they also light up, with a pattern that looks like it was ripped from the world of TRON. It turns out that those lights have a purpose beyond just being nice to look at.

As HTC explains in a video published to Twitter, those lights allow for better motion tracking – in fact, HTC says that those lights enable the controller to "track every move, every flick of the wrist." HTC also says that the thumbsticks and buttons on the inside of the controller have been ergonomically designed, which presumably means that you'll be able to spend more time playing without fatigue.

Unfortunately for us, HTC's 23-second video doesn't give away too many details. It does, however, give us one last morsel of information, and it's arguably the most important thing about these controllers: HTC says that VIVE Cosmos controllers will be "instantly compatible with your existing VR experiences," so if you've already got a collection of VR games, these controllers will work with them out of the box.

For more, we're just going to sit back and wait on HTC. The company says that it will continue making new Cosmos announcements on its website, but when those will actually be made is anyone's guess. We'll keep an eye out for more, so stay tuned.
