Getting Started With Oculus Quest 2 – Setting Up Your Headset

Learn how to properly setup your brand new standalone headset.

So, you just picked up your Oculus Quest 2 headset and you’re ready to dive into a massive catalog of AAA games and apps like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Beat Saber, or Blaston!. But maybe this is your first VR headset and you’re not 100% sure how to get started setting up your new device. Well, we’re here to help! Over the next few of minutes we’re going to explain how to get the most of your new device, from setting up your account to establishing your guardian system. So wash your hands, grab your headset, and lets do this.

First up you’re going to need to plug your headset into a power source using the provided USB-C cable and wall charger. Next, download the official Oculus companion app via the iOS App Store or Google Play. In addition to setting up your headset, this app can also be used to search your catalog of games, purchase new apps, access different settings, and perform various other tasks. After downloading the app you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Facebook account. Unfortunately, this is non negotiable. All new Oculus hardware requires a Facebook account in order to function properly, so, yeah..

The rest of the setup process takes place inside the headset itself. Turn on the headset by holding the power button located on the side for 2 seconds and adjust the two plastic pieces located on the backstrap to tighten the headset. Don’t forget to adjust the center velcro strap as well. Once inside the headset, you’ll be prompted to use your Touch controllers to proceed through the tutorial. These should come pre-paired with your headset; you can push a button or squeeze a trigger to wake them if they don’t appear immediately.

After choosing a language you’ll then need to adjust the clarity of your headset by physically moving the lenses based on your personal IPD measurements. Remove the headset and manually slide the lenses closer or further together until you find the sweet spot. The Quest 2 supports the average person’s IPD of 62mm to 65mm, so there’s a good chance you’ll find a distance that’s right for you.

You’ll then be asked to connect to the internet by signing into a local network. Once you’ve entered the information you’ll be provided with a quick safety video explaining how to properly setup your guardian and clear your play space, after which your headset and controllers will download an initial update. This can take roughly five minutes so feel free to remove it while it does its work. Once completed you’ll need to pair the headset with your mobile app either automatically through the app or manually by looking for the code inside the headset.

Finally, you’ll use your Oculus Touch controllers to set your floor level and draw your guardian safety system. This will prevent you from accidentally bumping into real-world objects by displaying a virtual barrier Much like the original Quest, Quest 2 can remember several different play spaces, allowing you to jump back into the action with ease.

And that’s it! Once you’ve set up your boundary you’re then free to explore the Oculus menu, peruse the store, connect with friends, whatever you’d like. You’ll also have the ability to enable hand tracking, which allows you to ditch the controllers and interact with certain content using your bare hands. Those who need additional assistance can check out the hand-tracking tutorial.
