Solidhaus Uses ARKit To Preview Virtual Houses In The Real World

Another day, another stunningly intuitive use for Apple’s ARKit. While yesterday brought us an intriguing AR manual app, today we’ve got what could be a revolution for the construction industry.

Solidhaus is already using VR to deliver realistic architecture visualization. You’ve heard the use case a thousand times by now; home owners might want to look at their new house before it’s built, or construction workers might want a better idea of how to put the piece together. With ARKit, though, Solidhaus now offers a service in which you can view your virtual building on-location. Simply bring up your iPhone and glimpse into the future at your new home.

The app allows you to upload 3D models and then accurately scales it within the environment that you’re viewing. Dynamic lighting renders the scene based on the position of the sun, too. You’re able to build up and remove layers of the building to get the complete picture and share your designs with others too. Imagine being able to quickly showcase specific features of a house to clients, and then swap them out based on the feedback you’re getting, all without the risk and cost actually building the thing.

Solidhaus shows how VR and AR can work in a tangent. At the office? Then view your new building in a virtual location. But now with AR you can get just as good a visualization while you’re on-location too. Interested in giving the app a look? Recent iPhone owners can sign up for the beta via an official website.
