Official Street Fighter II VR Experience Puts You In A Classic Stage

Capcom’s Street Fighter II is the next gaming classic to get the VR treatment.

Next weekend will see the Capcom Pro Tour North American Finals get underway at Red Bull’s Battle Grounds in Boston. The event will see the best Street Fighter V players in the US gather to decide who takes home the grand prize. But the show isn’t just for SFV players.

Also debuting at the event is a VR experience based on the legendary Street Fighter II. The app, running on the HTC Vive and using the Vive Tracker peripherals, puts players in the now-iconic bonus stage from that game in which players have to beat up a car as fast as possible. In the original experience, you’d have to use your skills to execute combos to reduce the car to pieces in seconds. We guess in VR you’ll just have to punch really, really fast.

Sadly, we don’t have any footage of the app just yet, and it sounds like it’s only being built for the purposes of this event.

It might not be a full Street Fighter VR experience, but given the complications that could entail (like actually having to learn how to execute a jumping Shoryuken in real life), we’ll settle for that for now. Hopefully it will release on PC as a free experience later down the line.

In fact, Capcom is even hosting its own little tournament for the VR app. The Grand Prize winner will get a custom Street Fighter V gaming cabinet, while first prize will be an HTC Vive.

Tickets to the finals cost $10. The show kicks off on November 18th and concludes the following day.
