Following the Vive’s price cut from $800 to $600 earlier this year, HTC is now offering a bundle of Vive hardware and an Nvidia GTX 1070 Founders Edition GPU to US customers for $800. The offer is available on the official Vive website while stocks last—and yes, it also includes a free copy of Fallout 4 VR.

Update (12/12/17): HTC has brought back the HTC Vive + GTX 1070 Founders Edition bundle in a ‘flash sale’ that’s perfect for someone ready to jump feet first into VR with a new headset and a VR Ready GPU. There’s no word on precisely how long the deal will be available, though the fine print indicates “limited time only, while supplies last. Only valid in US.”

Update (10/29/17): HTC has dropped $200 from the 1070 Founders Edition bundle, bringing it down from $999 to $799 for the whole package. This also includes a free pre-order of Bethesda’s upcoming Fallout 4 VR (normally $60), which amounts to a whopping $260 savings.

Most GTX 1070s still tend to retail above $400, and the Founder’s Edition, with its fancy ‘tessellated’ cooler design, can sometimes be hard to come by. Although Nvidia’s site is now flush with stock, a price this low (just $200 after accounting for the Vive’s $600 price tag) is pretty damn near unbeatable.

The previous generation GTX 970 continues to be the minimum spec for the Vive, but the GTX 1070 GPU is a much better option today, with its Pascal architecture bringing various VR optimisations, giving you greater headroom for running demanding VR titles at higher quality settings. We recommended the 1070 as a great ‘mid range’ GPU option for VR in this article.

The trial version of Microsoft’s Monster Truck Madness probably had something to do with it. And certainly the original Super Mario Kart and Gran Turismo. A car nut from an early age, Dominic was always drawn to racing games above all other genres. Now a seasoned driving simulation enthusiast, and former editor of Sim Racer magazine, Dominic has followed virtual reality developments with keen interest, as cockpit-based simulation is a perfect match for the technology. Conditions could hardly be more ideal, a scientist once said. Writing about simulators lead him to Road to VR, whose broad coverage of the industry revealed the bigger picture and limitless potential of the medium. Passionate about technology and a lifelong PC gamer, Dominic suffers from the ‘tweak for days’ PC gaming condition, where he plays the same section over and over at every possible combination of visual settings to find the right balance between fidelity and performance. Based within The Fens of Lincolnshire (it’s very flat), Dominic can sometimes be found marvelling at the real world’s ‘draw distance’, wishing virtual technologies would catch up.

I mean a reference card. I hope in the future reference card will have a modern design (no mono air cooler).

    • Cl

I actually hope they continue this way. Some computer cases like the one i just bought, fractal nano s, do better with blower fans because the psu is just underneath the graphics card which restricts airflow to multi fan designs. Since all the aftermarket cards usually dont use blower fans it would be difficult to find cards for cases like this.

I agree. This is the type of cooler I look for as well.

        • Luke

          cool I didn’t know this.

  • Oscar

$999? That’s how much just the headset costs here in Sweden…Even after the recent price cut lmfao…

  • Luke

bought a 1070 (preowned) last week only to play fallout 4 on steam vr with my oculus rift. 1060 was 100 euro less but many games will run better for a whyle so it’s ok for now.
Now I cross my fingers to be able to play F4 with my Oculus.

Reducing the price of the Vive won’t make it better than Oculus. Instead of beating a dead horse that nobody want (not even google) they should try to improve the Vive.

    • JSPorron

      Yeah, because it’s already better.

Non-sense aside, Facebook is likely listen to your Rift’s mic just like what they’re doing with on your phone. I can only hope they are not watching your camera’s feed too.

The video they collect is their property, it’s in the Eula. It’s pretty safe to assume they have plans for it.

    • Andrew Jakobs

I don’t know, if it’s the same price as the Oculus Rift, than I would have to think which one I would buy.. But knowing that there are already newer better lighthouses (but dont’ ship yet) I’m not really wanting to buy the headset just now, as the current headset (or controllers) isn’t compatible with those just yet. Unless the newer headsets already incorporate the newer trackerchips (which ofcourse is possible as those trackerchips are backward compatible with the older lighthouses). So knowing these might creep into their incremental improvements on the shipped headsets, it’s a bit of a bitch to buy a vive now.

  • Foreign Devil

ah crap I just bought a GTX 1080 a month ago. . . .. . I totally would have gone for this deal. I have Rift but no Vive. I’m annoyed how my Guardian system NEVER stays in place on the Rift.

    • ummm…

i have a vive. i enjoy how my velcro straps have started to give way………..

    • azazel

if you moved your sensors, then you will need to redo the sensor setup and this problem will disappear until you move your sensors again

      • Andrew Jakobs

That’s the same with the Vive (I’m just saying this before some Vive fanboy starts to say it doesn’t happen with the vive).

  • oompah

    still too expensive
happy with cardboard with moto g4 plus

    • ummm…

i hear ya. i made a cardboard car, and i drive it to work everyday.

  • What are the chances of the Vive getting a refresh to include their latest modifications?

    1. The updated knuckle controllers.
    2. The updated deluxe headstrap.
    3. The updated lighthouse boxes.
    4. Price matched against Rift.

That is what I want as there is no point (imo) buying new now knowing they have updates to most of their hardware available as separate purchases, that and the Pimax 8K around the corner that can use #1 and #3 making a (hopefully) better future proofed purchase.

    • ummm…

      there are no knuckle controllers…..

      • Yes there are. Google it.
If you mean you can not buy them yet. That is correct. They are sitting on em for some reason, probably the refresh that I mentioned above when it comes.

        • ummm…

          yeah….thats what i mean…..;)

        • dogbite

No doubt the bundle is meant to get rid of inventories of the older controllers and strap.

        • Andrew Jakobs

What he means is, the knuckle controllers aren’t available yet so there is no way it would come with a new bundle just yet.

  • ummm…

WHAT A RIP OFF!!I I BOUGHT MY VIVE OVER A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AT FULL PRICE! unbelievable.

  • Abelvonsnabel

LOL that’s the price for the HTC Vive alone here in Sweden. So unfair!

  • RFC_VR

Founders edition? No thanks… overpriced and thermal throttling issues due to poor fan/cooling implementation.

Much better off with a non reference design from one of the main players…and I wouldn’t buy a GTX 1070 it’s a underpowered card for supersampling (which you really want /need to clean up the display on many Vive titles)

  • NooYawker

Microsoft mixed reality headset dropped to $200. Hard to beat that.

  • azazel

The funny thing is you can get a Rift, extra sensor, Fallout 4 VR and a 1070 Founders edition for $810 right now. If you do this you will get a boatload of free vr content from Oculus too. not too mention this HTC bundle does not include the Deluxe audio strap so you will need to spend an extra $100 just to make the Vive almost as comfortable as the Rift
