Oculus Link vs. Air Link

What’s the difference between Oculus Link and Oculus Air Link? Oculus Link uses a cable to connect your headset directly to your PC. This will generally result in the best visual performance, and in most cases it will let your headset’s battery last significantly longer than if you use Air Link.

Oculus Air Link is the same feature as Oculus Link, except wireless. If you have an ideal network configuration, Air Link can be a great way to easily play PC games wirelessly with Quest. Without an ideal network configuration, you might have issues with Air Link (like lag or low quality visuals).

Tethered: Oculus Link Cable

Oculus Link technically works with any USB cable, including the one that comes in the box with Quest, but without a fairly long cable you won’t have much room to move around. If you’re only planning to play seated games like racing or flying sims, you can probably get by with the included cable, but you’ll probably want to buy a dedicated cable that’s long enough that you can really spread your virtual wings.

An inexpensive option is to combine this Anker 10ft USB 3.0 cable with this CableCreation 16ft USB 3.0 extender for a total of 26 feet for around $39 from Amazon.

Alternatively, Oculus sells a lighter (but much more expensive) 16ft USB 3.0 Oculus Link cable for $80, also available on Amazon.

Whether you pick a third-party USB 3.0 cable or Oculus’ own cable, both will give you the same visual experience when used with Oculus Link.

Wireless: Oculus Air Link Network Recommendations

You’ll need a properly configured network for Oculus Air Link to deliver a good wireless PC VR experience. Here’s what to do to ensure the best performance:

  • PC connected to router/access-point via Ethernet cable
  • Router supporting Wi-Fi 5 (also called 802.11AC) or Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E (also called 802.11AX)
  • Headset connected to 5GHz Wi-Fi band
  • Router in the same room as the headset or in line-of-sight, and at least 1m off the ground
  • Don’t use a mesh network configuration (extenders, etc)

So my 970 works and steamvr games too.Actually booting up streamvr hasn’t connected.

    • Would you know if it works with 2 x GTX970 in SLI mode?

    • ballsack

      lmao

  • Sam Reynolds

The cable on that link is only 3ft long!

  • impurekind

Surely the Link cable should come with Quest in the box in the future, especially if it can be used as a normal charging cable too.

    • GhengisFong

it does now, and it is roughly 10′ long, but for just under $19, you can get a 16′ USB extension cable, giving you 26′, but it very clearly says exactly what I just said, in the article.

      • Kitsu

Speaking as someone who bought a new $400 Q2 back in Feb ’21, all that came in the box was the headset, controllers, SHORT charging cord and adapter, as well as the extra frame for glasses-wearers. No Link cable.

        • GhengisFong

Wow! Well I am sorry to hear that, and to have mislead anyone. Funny that they reduce cost in so many areas, some of them in important areas that contained a higher quality of parts(although they did a good job of making advancements in its design despite reducing manufacturing cost), but after saving all of that money on production, they no longer offer the long cable. Probably had to do with them discontinuing the Rift, and knowing that they had you over a barrel. The good news is that affordable options on Amazon are becoming more and more available. I just bought another cable, USB C ii USB C, for under $10. It was fault long as well, about the same length as the original link cable jj

        • Tommy Daly

You can buy the link cable (knock-offs) for like $20-$25, and 16 ft long

  • Brad

Wow, I’ve never heard of a USB 3 Optical cable before!
    ;-)
Someone needs to go back to the Oculus compatibility page and update this page…

  • So uh… Hyper Dash article when? OwO

  • Ryan

it costs the same as a rift s lmao

    • Charlie Anderson

      come back zx81 yea any1remember it…?

      • George

What about the ZX80? Much more revolutionary than the ZX81.

      • Bruce Baker

We have a ZX81 still, my father has kept it. Sucked so bad trying to type out games then working out where I went wrong.

    • GhengisFong

The point is this… Get a Quest, because you don’t have a high-end PC. Play it, decide that you like it, and so save up your money to buy a gaming PC. Now that you have done that, instead of having to buy another $500+ on another VR headset unit, to play Rift games, simply plug your Quest into the PC, download a few small programs, and “viola!”, you are on your way… Does that make sense?

      • jisdaboss1

wait does it work with nvidia geforce gtx 1050 if you know? or if it will eventually be supported by all gpu’s?

        • GhengisFong

I have a GTX 1650. It works with that card. Most of my other settings are above the recommended. One are two are below the recommended but well above the minimum. If you go to the Oculus web site, you can find the minimum and recommended settings, for everything on your computer. I bought a $500 gaming laptop at Walmart, although I really think that someone really screwed up. I was looking at a $700 laptop, and then they told me that it was like $460. I jumped on it, but couldn’t believe it. It is above

      • George

Problem with that approach is that he’ll never save up enough to get a High end gaming PC after spending all his money on the Oculus store.

      • You mean “voila!” surely (“oi” is pronounced “wa” in french)… Does that make sense? ;-)

  • impurekind

I presume I need to get some kind of USB C to USB A version of the extension cable (since I don’t have a USB C port on my machine), right?

    • Sydney Butler

Yes, alternatively, I have used a USB A-C dongle and then connected a normal C-to-C cable. Works perfectly with the Quest.

      • Do you know if it works with 2 x GTX970 in SLI mode?

        • SLI support usually depends on the game in question.

  • Anthony

what if you have a nvidia gtx 460, will it still work then?

    • ryan

      no

  • questionmanerijtndflkgjnjkn

So i have a desktop nvidia 1060 3gb will this work?

    • Ryan

It will most likely struggle with demanding games, but yes it will.

      • valenesco45

actually i barely run steamvr with the 1060 3gb, let alone playing any steam game…very messy, but then there’s another issue i only have 800-900 mb/s when i plug the cable :(

    • RebelRedRollo

      It won’t from my experience.

  • jisdaboss1

Will it ever be compatible with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050? I really need to know because i bought one thinking it would, but isn’t

    • Darkriph

Impossible to say, FB does not communicate these things well.
Also the 1050 is not powerful enough to run most PCVR games.
I was running a AMD RX570 pretty smoothly only occasional fps drops.
They are very cheap now so if your on a budget that would be your cheapest safe bet.

  • IPugK

does nvidia geforce gtx 2050 work

    • Ryan

if u mean 1050? then no unfortunately. It’s dumb because it does support AMD rx 400 series which underperforms the 1050 ti. The gtx 2050 does not exist lol.

      • Amni3D

My theory is that its more about the encoding capabilities of the GPU than its raw power.

For example, an RX550 is technically Link supported even though it’s far less than the min spec for VR. I’d imagine because the RX500 line had a push by AMD to have some good encoding functionality with Relive

    • Jesusaves

Lol, no but the 2055 does.

    • LanceQS

an rtx 2050 does exist, but it is a laptop gpu. compare to a gtx 1650

  • Fire Kehan

Does the i5 3470 cpu work with it too

    • Ethan

I think it says on the website only 4th gen and up. Chances are whatever GPU you are running will probably be bottlenecked by the CPU anyway.

  • Alex

Yes, I recommend, works like a charm with a 5ghz connexion

    • R3ST4RT

Yes, after using link and virtual desktop, I can say that I like virtual desktop WAAAAAAY better! The lack of a cable is freeing.

I’m using a 2070S combined with an i5 7600K, and 16Gb of Ram. I’m also using an Asus RT-AC68U 5Ghz router which has been excellent for this.

  • TechPassion

What for? If you have Geforce card and strong CPU for Oculus Link, you just buy HP Reverb G2 and that’s it. All these extra accessories needed for Quest to be G2 are equally expensive. With Quest 2 you get worse resolution, worse panels, worse audio (can we even call it audio? Something coming out of tiny hole) so you need to buy quality headphones to match G2. It is a worthless effort to buy Quest 2 and be spied as a cherry on cake.

    • Andrew Jakobs

Well, the only thing you really might need extra is the Deluxe strap. and one of the biggest advantages of the Quest is still it’s wireless and PC VR is also able to do wireless if you have the correct Wificard. The quality of the controllers of the Quest is much better than those of the G2. ‘Only’ thing the G2 excels at is the displays and audio.. But the Quest 2 is, even with the deluxe strap, much cheaper than the Reverb G2.

      • TechPassion

Hi. Not cheaper. If you buy good quality headphones which are adequate to G2 headphones, you need to add 200 EUR more and put some bulky headphones on your head which move independently of Quest 2. There are some cheap audio solutions, but why would you buy VR to have 30% immersion cut away because of crap audio. Audio is I would say 30% of the fun. Other thing – for this Quest 2 link experience (which makes the image suck being honest) you need more powerful PC than for regular cable-connected VR. But yes, wireless is awesome. I swear here not once when I step on cable or it entangles into my chair. Wireless is the future. 100%. We need to wait some more time. HTC claims it will present something revolutionary on CES 2021. Let’s wait and see.

  • TechPassion

Gefoce 3060 Ti works great with HP Reverb G2 in most games (99% of games?).
Very afordable card and super powerful.

    • Andrew Jakobs

And yet this article is about the Oculus Link.

      • UberNorman

@andrewjakobs:disqus you are shilling hard for FB/Oculus, take a day off, its painful for the rest of us.

        • Andrew Jakobs

or you should just take the rest of your life off, it’s painful for the rest of us.. This article is all about the Link, and TechPassion keep yapping about the G2 totally unrelated to the article itself. And I don’t shill hard for FB/Oculus, I don’t own a Rift(S) nor a Quest(2).

  • T2814

Virtual Desktop is a literal game changer. Not all games work with it unfortunately but the vast majority do and after playing titles like Half Life: Alyx and Boneworks wirelessly it’s really hard to go back to a wired experience.

For anyone on the fence about trying Virtual Desktop, I’ve been using it with my standard Xfinity modem/router combo. It gives me a wifi speed between my Quest 2 and modem of about 655mbps and I’ve found the that to be more than good enough for everything I’ve tried. It might trip up with games that are ultra-sensitive to lag (Beat Saber on the ultra hard settings maybe?) but in practice everything feels fine to me. I recently played thru Wilson’s Heart via Virtual Desktop and I could never imagine playing that game tethered with all the turning around you have to do.

I’m using a gaming laptop with a 8th gen i7, 16GB of RAM and a GTX1070 with 8GB of RAM. It’s an older machine but still runs everything well and with older or less demanding games games I’m even able to crank up the resolution and refresh rate to high.

    • Ed

Hello. I’m a little confused. So if you do a wireless connection do you still need a supported graphics card? We have a GTX1050 which is not supported.

      • T2814

Yes, you do still need a supported graphics card since the PC is still doing the heavy lifting with regard to graphics processing.

    • FutureQuestOwner

What is the range like? I am unable to move my pc but would like to play 2 rooms away. How laggy would this be. If you could test this that would be greatly appreciated.

      • T2814

It really depends on the walls in your home and whether the signal can travel thru them without significant degradation. I’ve used Virtual Desktop and Air Link as far as 15-20 feet from my router, two rooms away. But there is a direct line of sight thru the doorways so the signal can travel without too many obstacles.

If possible, try to get an app for your phone that measures wifi speed; internet speed is not a factor here, you only need to know the speed of your connection from the device to the router and wifi speed to your phone should give you a good approximation of that. If it’s around 500mbps or higher then you should be ok for most applications though games like Beat Saber that are very sensitive to lag may not perform as well.

        • David Pollitzer

Can’t you use an Ethernet cable to put a router in your game area?

  • When they list “Vega Series”, does that include all the way down to Vega 8 and below? Because Ryzen 5 with Vega 8 is usually a pretty inexpensive set-up.

    • Experience will not be great, max what you can do is to play quest like games on low settings.

  • Lacobus

It says NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060M is not supported but I’ve being using it without too much trouble. HL: Alyx has a bit of slowdown here or there but I’m at the very low end of the reccomended specs.

which column is the x in? at the top it says supported or not supported.

      • Tommy Daly

        X means supported

        • Kitsu

Why are you replying that to me? I know damn well what it means, I was asking Robin what one they were talking about.

        • This is a good post, your article has shown many things about the backlinks can you suggest me how should i make backlinks to increase ranking of my hosting website

      • Tommy Daly

X means supported, but do your homework, a couple of these are “barely” supported and you will either find low frame rate/lag, or games coming out soon that the “bare minimum” GPU won’t be able to handle even a few months down the road.

I couldnt play smooth fallout 4 or No mans sky with vd.
I can smoothly do it with airlink.

All of a sudden I’ve been having a lot of problems with my Link cable and Oculus Quest 2 playing PC VR. I will boot up the quest to then Oculus then I put on The Quest 2 and initiate the link I am done transported into the Oculus white room thing. Every time I lift my headset up to look at my computer monitor I put the headset back on and the entire link will freeze I have to quit out of it. All my specs are up to par

  • It is hard to believe anyone visiting this website on a regular basis wouldn’t already know all of this and, most likely, already be operating wirelessly for at least half a year now.

I’ve personally had some issues with the USB and Quest. I dunno what, but my ports are often reported as USB 2.0 when my motherboard is entirely 3.0. This is even after trying various rather costly cables.

After I replaced my home router with a 5Ghz compatible model though, the wireless has been very dependable. After the Fall was the first game I’ve seen in ages that had an issue with the wireless, and I chalk that up more to an unfinished game then anything to do with the network. Wireless is the most foolproof and easiest to use solution.

If the batteries run low, I just run a cable to a USB power hub, sparing both my computer the energy to charge it, as well as the finicky USB connection issues. It’s easy, quick, and painless to deal with. Wireless, in my experience, is 100% the way to go!

“An inexpensive option is to combine this Anker 10ft USB 3.0 cable with this CableCreation 16ft USB 3.0 extender for a total of 26 feet for around $39 from Amazon.”

Except for the fact that this is absolutely TERRIBLE advice!!! Using a USB 3.0 extender/repeater when not LITERALLY REQUIRED adds a bunch of unnecessary additional latency!

USB 3.0 extension cables OR >20ft/6m 3rd party Link cables w/ a USB 3.0 repeater already built into them should ONLY EVER BE USED if you ACTUALLY NEED the extra cable length!

Everyone else should just get a USB repeater-less 20ft/6m Link cable from a quality supplier for the best possible latency/performance over the longest possible length.

For games that need a menu button, it is super annoying playing on a controller and VR controllers at the same time. If you don’t want to do that, you have to use the menu button instead of the oculus button for the Virtual Desktop menu. Even if you change the controls, it still works like a potato.

    • James

You do need a Wifi 6e Router for Quest 3. Wifi 6 is not enough. I tried a very good one and had to switch it for a cheap 6e a month later. A difference like day and night.

  • Arno van Wingerde

    I do not get it:
    1) VR done right means 4K gaming @ 90 fps or so… for flatscreen gaming you are looking at the heaviest graphics card. Can the lowest graphics cards actually do better than the Quest3 standalone?
    2) how come AMD’s 7000 series is not mentioned?

  • Julian Spears

So, I checked my GPU in Task Manager and it says it has GPU 0 and GPU 1, I don’t know that much about computers so I checked both of them, and neither of them are on the GPU list, although for GPU 1 it says that I’m using NVIDIA Quadro T1000, so can someone tell me if it’s compatible or not? and I also only have 16 GB of ram total and only 15.7 GB available so what should I do about that?
