Ride shotgun with an explosive ball of gas in this 13-minute immersive adventure.
This past February it was announced that Doctor Who: The Runaway — a brand new Doctor Who-inspired interactive VR animation — would be making its way to the Tribeca Film Festival’s Immersive Arcade in NYC, treating festival-goers to an original sci-fi adventure featuring the voice of the thirteenth Doctor herself, Jodie Whitacker.
Today, BBC has delivered our first look at the 13-minute interactive journey with an action-packed trailer full of holograms, explosions, and plenty of cataclysmic predictions from a fast-talking Timelord. You know, just your typical Doctor Who shenanigans.
According to a brief synopsis provided by the BBC, players will begin their journey aboard the legendary Tardis after having collided with a glowing ball of explosive “living energy” named Volta.
“You’ve been in a collision. You wake inside the TARDIS. The Doctor introduces you to the person, or thing, you collided with. He’s a strange and magnificent ball of living energy called Volta.
“The problem is, a squad of galactic busybodies has other plans for Volta. Bad ones. Drawn into a frantic chase, you become the Doctor’s unlikely assistant as she races against time to get Volta home to his parents. Armed with a sonic screwdriver, it is down to you to help the Doctor as she faces the forces of evil, and teenage angst, in this animated 13-minute VR adventure from the team behind Doctor Who Series 11.”
BBC states that Doctor Who: Runaway is an interactive VR experience, although they’ve yet to provide any information in regards to what players what will be doing throughout their 13-minute rescue mission.
Based on the trailer, however, it appears as though we can expect to be piloting the Tardis at some point in the adventure. Doctor Who: Runaway is set to premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival Friday, April 26th – Saturday, May 5th in Tribeca, New York.
