News: Marvel Studios Tosses 'Falcon & the Winter Soldier' AR Game to Fans in Time for Finale

Disney Plus shows WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier are both streaming hits, but the two series could not be more different in terms of giving fans a taste of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the two titles do have another thing in common: Marvel Studios delivered an AR experience for each of them just ahead of their finale episodes.

While WandaVision's AR experience arrived via Facebook Messenger, Falcon and the Winter Soldier's AR content is locked away in the Disney Insider app for iOS.

The experience starts with the Shield Challenge, a mini-game that replicates (spoiler alert) Sam Wilson's training sequence with Captain America's shield in the penultimate episode of the series.

In order to play, you'll need a fairly wide open space, which you'll scan with your iPhone camera. Pro tip: scan as much of the space as you can, including walls. Once you're done, tap the screen to continue, and the app will generate targets throughout the scanned space.

Now, the game begins. Long press on the screen over a target to generate a power meter, then release to throw the shield. You'll see it bounce off the targets on your screen, with more points generated by additional ricochets.

Depending on your prowess with the game, you can unlock various editions of Captain America shields from across the MCU timeline and view them in your space through the Honor the Legacy section.

Finally, if you have an iPhone XS/XR or newer, you can wear your unlocked shields in the appropriately named Wield the Shield section.

Keep in mind, you'll need an iPhone or iPad compatible with ARKit to play along. You'll also need a device with a TrueDepth camera for the Wield the Shield portion. So if you have an Android device, you might have to just make your own shield.

Despite this particular AR experience occurring in the walled garden of Apple's iOS, Marvel Studios has previously shown the willingness to experiment with different platforms for its AR experiences. For instance, for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios published AR content for Google Pixel, and on social media platforms including Facebook and Snapchat.

Marvel has also branched out into AR merchandise and games with Dimension of Heroes for Lenovo Mirage, the Iron Man MK50 robot, and the Hero Vision Iron Man AR helmet.
