News: Snapchat Drapes the Statue of Liberty in the American Flag for Fourth of July Augmented Reality Lens

Under the rocket's red glare and the bombs bursting in air, the Statue of Liberty is swaying in celebration this Fourth of July thanks to Snapchat.

On Thursday, Snapchat launched a new augmented reality experience to commemorate Independence Day for those at or in the vicinity of Liberty Island in New York City. Using its new Landmarker Lens technology, the Snapchat camera can detect the presence of the monument and bring it to life. When the Lens is activated, the statue, clad in an American flag, will begin rocking back and forth beneath virtual fireworks.

Not since Ghostbusters 2 has Lady Liberty moved with such vigor!

If you can't make it to New York City on the holiday, don't worry about it, the experience will be available through the balance of summer.

Since unveiling the new Landmarker capability for Lens Studio earlier this year, Snapchat has been eager to show off its new toy, with experiences including a Game of Thrones activation at the Flatiron Building in New York and a series of Pride Month effects for the Flatiron and the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

Snapchat's regular rotation of Landmarker targets also includes the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Buckingham Palace in London, and the Capitol building in Washington, DC. Snapchat has also created a special Landmarker Lens for Cannes Lions.

Between Landmarker Lenses and Marker Tracking, Snapchat is cornering the "point of sale" AR trade, where advertisers are eager to engage consumers when they are out and about. This also means that we're a few steps closer to realizing the vision of Hyper Reality, where virtual ads exist everywhere.
