AT&T to Launch DirectTV App for Magic Leap One in 2019, Sets Up 5G Test Area at Magic Leap Headquarters

Magic Leap and AT&T have lifted the lid on multiple parts of their mysterious relationship today. According to AT&T Communications CEO John Donovan, the company is planning to launch a beta version of DirectTV Now for the Magic Leap One in 2019.

The announcement came onstage on Wednesday at the L.E.A.P. conference in Los Angeles alongside Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz and Magic Leap chief product officer Omar Khan.

Not only did the team announce the app, but Donovan gave the audience a preview of what it will look like (albeit via concept rendering) on the Magic Leap One. Being the only television app on this new device gives AT&T a brand new vector to snag subscribers and offers more explanation as to why the company plans to start selling the Magic Leap One in its stores this fall.

Within the demonstration kiosks at select stores, visitors will be able to sample immersive WarnerMedia content, giving them a taste of why they might want to part with $2,300 to enter the "Magicverse."

The other big news dropped during the presentation is that AT&T plans to set up a 5G test zone on the Magic Leap campus in Plantation, Florida, giving those in the area a taste of our high-speed wireless and augmented reality future. The goal of the test area will be to test devices and applications using the Magic Leap One.

"New and immersive experiences from Magic Leap's developers eventually riding on the AT&T mobile 5G network will redefine entertainment and productivity," said Donovan. "And only AT&T is bringing us one step closer to the future of connectivity with the introduction of a mobile 5G network and a mobile 5G device in parts of 12 cities this year."

Finally, AT&T will also host a Magic Leap hackathon from November 9 to 11 in San Francisco. Those looking to enter the competition can find more information via the event's website.
