Eminem's Coachella Set Let Fans Watch In AR

You have to feel sorry for Eminem. Trying to top of Destiny’s Child reunion must have had the rap star feeling like a kid yodeling in a Walmart. At least he had AR to help him.

The international icon took an unexpected stance on watching his performance through the lens of a smartphone at Coachella this weekend. Rather than telling fans to put their screens away, the experience was actually enhanced with the help of AR. An exclusive app with geo-tagged time-stamped content projected virtual images into the real world during the show. During Kill You, for example, you could watch a giant digital axe appear above the stage and descend upon the crowds.

Other AR features like projecting a giant poster could also be accessed through the app during the weekend. Coachella’s second weekend kicks off in just a few days so fans will get another chance to experience the event this way.

We’re not about to suggest that every artist should start doing this, but it’s definitely an interesting way of experiencing a concert for larger bands. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m still partial to the real-life experience though I’ll admit I’d probably take my phone out of my pocket if Iron Maiden did something to this effect. As for Eminem, he’ll be taking the VR experience on tour across the world this year.
