Vivecon 2021 Scheduled For May, New Headset Teased

In a post made earlier today on Twitter, HTC announced the dates for its first-ever Vivecon. While little is known about the mysterious event so far, recently released images teasing new VR hardware could be foreshadowing several big reveals.

Taking place May 11th through the 12th, Vivecon 2021 will be conducted remotely, according to a somewhat vague response by HTC. How, exactly, remains to be seen. The company has not shied away from the use of VR technology for past events. Perhaps we’ll see a setup similar to that of its 2020 Vive Ecosystem Conference, which was conducted on the VR social platform Engage.

HTC has spent the last week teasing fans with mysterious images and cryptic messages referencing a new VR headset. Last Friday the company shared a single photo of the unidentified hardware with the caption, “now that the accessories are out of the way, let’s get down to business.” This was followed by a second photo released later that day featuring what is believed to be the same device, this time hidden under a black veil. This photo came with the message, “VR Headset – Confirmed.”

Today’s Vivecon reveal offers us our third “look” at the device, revealing what appears to be a sleek all-black front plate with the classic Vive logo.

While it’s impossible to say for sure, the appearance of an onboard camera in one of the photos has lead many to speculate that HTC is releasing its own all-in-one standalone device. If true, this would put the company in direct competition with Facebook and its Oculus Quest platform.

It looks as though we’ll have to wait until May to find out more.
