GDC 2018: Magic Leap Launches Developer SDK Preview, Creator Portal

From today you can start working on content for the Magic Leap One.

Following a tease this weekend, the secretive augmented reality company today launched its Creator Portal, a suite of resources that will help developers get up and running making AR content for Magic Leap One. The most vital ingredient here is the Lumin SDK (software development kit), which is accessible just as soon as you sign up to become a Magic Leap Creator (which requires an email, name, date of birth and compliance with terms and conditions).

The SDK is currently available as a ‘Technical Preview’ and is compatible with both Unity and Unreal engines via plug-ins as well as Magic Leap’s upcoming Lumin Runtime, which is yet to be detailed. The fine print explains that not all the functionality is available just yet and there are plenty of known bugs to contend with. Still, it’s your first chance to get creating for the headset, which will project virtual images into the real world for you to interact with.

Through the Portal itself you’ll find documentation to guide you through content creation on the platform as well as access to a forum to communicate with other developers. Tutorials include introductions to a range of Magic Leap’s new features, including the Remote controller you’ll use to interact with content, with more to come.

Pretty soon you’ll be able to share your creations with something called ‘Magic Leap World’, a marketplace that’s labeled as ‘Coming Soon’ on the website. Developers will be able to publish and price their experiences. World will also allow developers to manage their development teams by distributing access to tools for creations.

Magic Leap One itself is expected to launch later this year as a Creator Edition, though no word on when it will start rolling out just yet.
