Doom 3: VR Edition Announced For PSVR, Coming This Month

Doom 3: VR Edition, an official VR version of id’s horror shooter, is launching on PSVR this month.

The news was just announced over on the PlayStation Blog. The game lands in just few weeks’ time on March 29th. This will be a full port of the 2004 original and its expansion packs, complete with support for the PSVR Aim Controller. It’s coming to PS4 and can be played on PS5 via backwards compatibility, but no word on versions of PC VR (or Oculus Quest) just yet.

Doom 3: VR Edition Announced

Doom 3 saw the gory shooter franchise double down on a horror element, getting players to battle demonic entities across an off-world research facility. Check out the teaser trailer above.

Doom 3 and the wider franchise have a long history with VR, of course. Series creator John Carmack demoed the game running inside the first prototype of what would become the Oculus Rift nearly 10 years ago before moving to Oculus full-time, a point that id owner Bethesda (which itself is owned by ZeniMax Media, which itself is now owned by Microsoft) used to dispute the origins of Oculus in a lengthy legal battle a few years ago.

Just recently, VR modder Dr.Beef brought the game to the Oculus Quest, too, and there was hope it mighti see release on Oculus App Lab. Now we have to wonder if this official port might get a full launch on the platform in the future.

Finally, there’s Doom VFR, a VR-exclusive spin-off that remixed elements of the 2016 Doom. We weren’t too taken with the game’s pacing but Doom 3’s slower approach and lengthy campaign will definitely make this one to look out for on PSVR later this month.
